Acne is a struggle, and so is dry skin and trying to find what can fix it, can be an even bigger struggle. We have scoured the internet to find exactly what fits us, but we see and read too much. Finding a routine for you can be extremely complicated, expensive, and time consuming. Don’t even get me started on dermatologists, you go in for one simple thing and the second you’re out, you’re contemplating whether Botox is your next step. If this is the case for you, I’m here to help you out. I am nothing, and I mean nothing, close to a skincare expert, but I know what it feels like to get dazed and confused just looking at the beauty products aisle.
First of all, don’t let the product intimidate you. The extreme variety of moisturizers and serums is alarming but nothing to worry about. Since you have still not mastered your own skincare routine, you won’t be needing a large number of products. So, I, someone who just recently learned what their skincare routine should be, am going to give you a couple of tips on what you need to create your own skincare routine and go from drab to fab!
- Tip#1: Take care of your skin! She’s your friend, not the enemy.
- Taking care of the skin is extremely important and actually easier than people make it out to be.
- For example, when pimples appear on the skin, try using a pimple sticker, spot cream, or good old patience for it to come out alone. Trying to pop it might irritate the skin further.
- Drink a lot of water! Water moisturizes the skin from inside out and is crucial in making the skin look naturally radiant instead of dull and dry. Try to take in at least 8 cups a day.
- Learn what your skin needs. Your skin might be oily, dry, or a combination of both. Figuring out what type of skin you have and how your skin reacts to certain things can help in the long run to find good products and home in on your problem areas.
- Just because it’s expensive, doesn’t mean it’s good. Some products may look nice and cost a pretty penny but that does not mean that it will actually do the job. If you have any doubt on a certain product, don’t be shy and go online and read some reviews. A lot of beauty customers leave super helpful reviews t help you figure out if you should splurge or save.

- Tip #2: Say no to harsh makeup wipes!
- Makeup wipes, as much as we love them and their practicality, they are actually damaging to the skin, no matter how organic and perfect they say they are. Even though we might have sworn by them for years, it’s time we throw them out. Here’s why:
- They remove makeup but do nothing for your skin. According to Yale Dermatologist, Mona Gahara, “…they’re basically the equivalent of swirling dirty toilet water around your bathroom…”. In other words, they do take your makeup off but are terrible for the skin. These wipes do not actually remove dirt, makeup, and residue, they just move them around. Because it takes so much pressure to take the makeup off, the skin gets easily irritated and causes further damage.
- What to do instead?
- Cleansing oil! Double cleansing is all the rage. The cleansing oils penetrate the skin to remove built up makeup, residue, spf, and dirt without irritating the skin. On dry skin, place the oil and massage t into the skin to remove remaining debris and watch your skin glow. In Allure’s “The 25 Best Cleansing Oils for Removing Makeup, Dirt, and Debris”, Karina Hoshikawa and Sarah Han go over which oil cleanser is best for your type of skin. 👀

- Tip #3 – SPF, SPF, SPF!
- No matter the day and its weather, sunscreen is key! Sunscreen protects your dermis from harmful UV rays the sun cast, even when the sun is hiding behind a grey sky. Applying sunscreen daily, either in or after your moisturizer can help even your skin tone, protect you from harming UV rays, prevent breakouts, prevent future skin diseases, and decelerates premature ageing. Trust me, your skin will be thanking you in the long run.
- SPF protection can come in many different shapes and sizes, but what matter is that you put some on. It comes in primers, moisturizers, setting sprays, foundations, etc. If you have any doubts, I suggest you visit your local Sephora or beauty store to find which step you prefer it on.

With these three tips in mind, you need to create a mini skincare routine that perfectly fits your skin. It may take time and a little research, maybe one or two YouTube videos max, no more than two. Once you get these three tips down, you’ll need three essential products to nourish your skin: cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. No, you don’t need 6 products before bed and 10 more in the morning. You also don’t need to be doing facemasks every single night or watching thousands of YouTube videos on why Neutrogena is actually really bad for your skin, which honestly, I don’t love either.
- Cleanser: It is extremely crucial to wash your face to remove excess dirt and residue. Post makeup removal make sure you wash your face with lukewarm water and clean it with a fresh face towel. Find the best dermatologist recommended cleanser for you at Byrdie.com.
- Moisturizer: Dry skin is ugly skin. Moisturize baby! Dry skin can dull the skin, cause breakouts, and further your acne struggles. Finding a good moisturizer to match your skin is key to taking care of your skin and keeping a beautiful and natural complexion. If you don’t know where to start, I suggest at Allure.com, where you’ll find great ones at any price.
- SPF: Like I said before, sunscreen is the holy grail for good radiant and glowing skin. Don’t be afraid to find which product is best for you and your skin. Make sure the SPF is higher than 30!
- If you cannot find which sunscreen is the best fit for you, this article from Allure can help you out with that. Here is a list of the highest awarded sunscreen. P.S. I personally love La Roche-Posay.
Once you master these simple tips and find these three products, your skin will start glowing before you know it. Get these basics down and before no time you’ll see your routine grow and grow until you find exactly what you need.
